Dimensionless numerical model for determination of magnetic regenerator's heat transfer coefficient and its operation.
Author(s) : SARLAH A., POREDOS A.
Summary
Finding optimum geometry and composition of a regenerator and best operating parameters of a magnetic refrigerator is crucial in a phase of refrigerator design. This is why the authors have built an experimental setup and designed a dimensionless numerical model for determining hydrodynamical and thermal properties of various types of non-magnetic regenerators porous structures. Results, of both experimental and numerical model, were later used in an upgraded numerical model of a magnetic refrigerator. Model includes different magnetic properties of layered or non-layered regenerators, various types of operation such as balanced/unbalanced flow and all necessary supplementary equipment of a refrigeration system. Numerical model will be in the future experimentally verified and used for optimization of an active magnetic regenerator (AMR) refrigerator design which is currently being built. With the use of the same physical and derived numerical model (for determination of hydro-dynamical/thermal properties of regenerators and for optimization of an AMR refrigerator), together with evaluated experimental data, the authors obtained better consistency and reliability of the final results and can thus avoid any errors in discrepancy between both models. Their research focuses on the influence of various design parameters (such as regenerator geometry (porosity, structure, layered/non-layered), refrigerator operation mode (balanced/unbalanced) and operating parameters (mass flow, frequency), magnetic field in an air gap (strength, time dependency of the field), chosen heat transfer fluid and magnetic material) of the AMR regenerator on the operation of the magnetic refrigerator. Aim of their research work is to find set of design and operation parameters, which will result in an optimal operation of the magnetic refrigerator and build them into a working prototype.
