Discussion of optimized design of endo-reversible heat transformation cycles.
Author(s) : ZIEGLER F.
Summary
There are some technical heat transformation devices, such as absorption heat pumps and refrigerators, whose performance is dominated by the heat exchangers which communicate with external heat sinks and sources. For such devices, the discussion of the performance of the endo-reversible idealization of the cycle (endo-reversible means that heat exchange with external reservoirs is the only irreversibility of a cycle) provides information of some technical relevance. The author discusses relationships in economic terms between the different heat exchangers of the endo-reversible heat transformation device. These relationships are not specific to sorption systems but are valid for all kinds of thermodynamic cycles. They are used to distribute the total invested area on the individual heat exchangers depending on the specific cost, the heat transfer coefficients and the respective heat load of each exchanger, in order to optimize the efficiency. It is found that in the case of equal specific cost and heat transfer coefficients of the individual components, the economic optimum is approximated if the driving temperature differences are equal, as long as the absolute temperatures of heat sinks and sources do not deviate too much from each other. If cost and transfer coefficients are not equal, their ratio has to be taken into account with the square root (square root criterion). The authors preferred to study certain sensitivities of the optimum rather than to derive the basic equations.
