Discussion on the use of dimensionless parameters in design of adsorbent beds.

Summary

A numerical study on heat and mass transfer in an annular adsorbent bed filled with adsorbent granules for an isobaric adsorption process is performed. Uniform pressure approach is employed to establish governing equations for the problem. Hence, the governing equations for the problem become as heat transfer equation for adsorbent bed and mass transfer equation for adsorbent particle. These equations are non-dimensionalized by using appropriate dimensionless parameters. The non-dimensionalization of the governing equations, and initial and boundary conditions provide three dimensionless parameters as Kutateladze number, a dimensionless parameter shown by G (the ratio of mass transfer diffusion in the radial direction of adsorbent particle to the heat transfer diffusion in the radial direction of the adsorbent bed), and ratio of bed outer and inner radius (Ro/Ri). After presenting comments on the obtained dimensionless results, examples are provided to describe the importance of the dimensionless parameters. The dimensionless parameters (G, Ku, and Ro/Ri) are calculated for an adsorbent bed filled with silica gel and these parameters are used to predict and reduce adsorption period.
