DRREAM: reducing rare earth use in magnetocaloric applications.

Number: 1685

Author(s) : SANDEMAN K. G.

Summary

"DRREAM" is a project that aims to reduce the use of rare earth elements (REs) in the life cycle of future magnetic cooling devices. We here describe some of the DRREAM consortium's initial experimental and theoretical findings, with emphasis on two driving motivations: the first is to reduce the required volume of RE-containing permanent magnet through the development of refrigerants with enhanced magnetocaloric effects. The second is to optimise the production of regenerator parts so as to improve heat transfer and minimise raw material wastage during manufacture.
