Dynamic modeling of water-cooled commercial centrifugal chillers.

Summary
Chillers with centrifugal compressors are used to provide chilled fluid for air conditioning and process cooling in commercial buildings, schools, hospitals, data centers, and other applications. Water-cooled chillers are developed with the objectives of lowering energy consumption and minimizing the impact of chiller operation on climate change. These goals are achieved through use of lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants and improvements to overall system efficiency through expensive system enhancements. Additional chiller efficiency enhancements can be achieved with an improved understanding of the underlying phenomena, which would also enable optimal control. The present study analyzes the performance of a 2110 kW commercial water-cooled centrifugal chiller and develops a dynamic model that only relies on typical measurements from chillers (i.e., coupling fluid measurements) to predict their performance over time, avoiding the need for extensive instrumentation on the refrigerant side. The model predicts experimental values within 3% on average. The steady-state and transient chiller performance at and between different AHRI conditions is reported and discussed.
