Improving the refrigeration cycle with turbo-expanders.

Author(s) : BRASZ J. J.

Summary

The replacement of the isenthalpic throttling process in R134a commercial water chillers can more than overcome the cycle disadvantage of R134a relative to low pressure alternatives such as R11 and R123. The use of an impulse-type turbine expander running at motor speed has allowed a cost-effective implementation of this power recovery concept. Use of this technology in other HVAC and refrigeration applications where the turbine rotor speed will match the rotational speed of an existing drive train is anticipated. Information and performances are given.
