Summary
This research studied the effect of low density polyethylene packaging, ethylene absorbers and storage temperatures on the postharvest preservation of papaya, by monitoring CO2 and C2H4 gas rate emission during the period of storage. These studies were carried out at the Laboratory of Physical Sciences of the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense. The experimental parameters compared were storage at room temperature or at 10°C (treatment A); fruits involved with low density polyethylene packaging film without ethylene absorbers stored at 10°C (treatment B); fruits involved with low density polyethylene packaging film and ethylene absorbers stored at room temperature (treatment C); fruits involved with low density polyethylene packaging film without ethylene absorbers stored at room temperature (treatment D). Papaya fruit from the "Solo" group cv. Golden were used, at the ripening stage of one to two black spots, conditioned in cardboard boxes containing 9 fruits each. The loss of fresh matter and the development of skin colour were evaluated. The results indicate that ethylene absorbers performed better when the fruit were stored at room temperature, and that the effect of cold storage overlapped the effect of ethylene absorbers. It was also possible to correlate the onset of the climacteric peak with colour development.
