Summary

The hydrides of La(Fe,Si)13 compounds are one of the promising magnetocaloric materials working at room-temperature. In this paper the homogeneous hydrogenation conditions of La(Fe,Si)13 and its substitutions La1-xCex(Fe,Mn,Si)13 were studied by the differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The results showed that the homogeneity of the hydrides of La(Fe,Si)13 could be improved by both increasing the hydrogenation temperature and hydrogen pressure, but for La1-xCex(Fe,Mn,Si)13 hydrides raising temperature is more effective. On the other hand, activation which can improve the surface quality or making a easy path for hydrogen diffusion is also important for getting a homogeneous hydride. The homogeneous hydride preserve the first-order magnetic transition leading to a large entropy change nearly the same as the parent sample, but the entropy change of the inhomogenious hydride was severely deceased.
