Summary

Several levels of application of calcium fertilizer were tested (from 100 to 150 kg/ha). Fruits were cold stored (15 °C, 80-85% RH) and analysed for 4 weeks at weekly intervals for fruit calcium content, internal browning intensity, ascorbic acid content, percent weight loss, total soluble solids, pH and titratable acidity. Fruits from plots treated with calcium had significantly lower internal browning development than the control up to the fourth week. Weight losses and internal browning were carefully investigated versus calcium fertilizer treatments and cold storage durations. It was concluded that applying calcium fertilizer at 125 kg/ha as a basal dressing is the most effective treatment for the control of internal browning in Mauritius.
