Summary

THE PHONONS HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED FOR THE STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION FROM TETRAGONAL TO ORTHORHOMBIC IN THE CASE OF HIGH CRITICAL TEMPERATURE YBACUO USING AN ANGULAR FORCE MODEL. THE ZONE CENTRE PHONONS AGREE WELL WITH THE RAMAN AND THE INFRARED MEASUREMENTS IN THE CASE OF THE TETRAGONAL PHASE AS COMPARED TO THE ORTHORHOMBIC ONE. THE ACOUSTICAL PHONONS EXHIBIT PHONON ANOMALIES IN BOTH THE TETRAGONAL AND THE ORTHORHOMBIC STRUCTURES. THE RELEVANCE OF THE PHONONSTO THE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY ARE DISCUSSED.
