Summary
Guidelines from the "Institut Royal Belge pour l'Amélioration de la Betterave" on avoiding frost damage to beet in Belgium are presented, with recommended dates in 6 regions for the end of harvesting and for preventive covering of piles in the absence of immediate risk of frost. After 3 days at no lower than -3 deg C, sugar losses in the top layers of beet piles were 3% for covered and 11% for uncovered; storage of beet in covered piles enabled the tare content to be decreased considerably during transfer to the factory.
