EFFECTS OF REFRIGERATED AERATION ON THE QUALITY OF STORED WHEAT.

Summary

THREE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT IN AUSTRALIA TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF REFRIGERATED AERATION TO CONTROL INSECTS, ON THE QUALITY OF WHEAT. DURING THE FIRST TEST, 1,650 TONNES OF NON TREATED WHEAT WERE STORED AT A HUMIDITY OF 8.8% IN A SILO EQUIPPED WITH AN INDEPENDANT REFRIGERATING PLANT. DURING THE SECOND TEST, 5,230 TONNES OF NON TREATED WHEAT WERE STORED AT A HUMIDITY OF 11.2% IN A SILO WITH COOLED AIR BEING CIRCULATED THROUGH THE GRAIN FOR 9 MONTHS. DURING THE THIRD TEST, 12,160 TONNES OF NON TREATED WHEAT, AT A HUMIDITY OF 9.9%, WERE STORED FOR 10 MONTHS IN AN INSULATED HORIZONTAL GRAIN STORE. THE MEAN TEMPERATURES OF THE WHEAT AT THE END OF EACH STORAGE PERIOD WERE 282, 278 AND 282 K (9, 5 AND 9 DEG C) RESPECTIVELY. THE MEAN HUMIDITY OF THE WHEAT IN BULK INCREASED BY 0.3-1.1%. REPEATED SAMPLING DURING STORAGE AND UNLOADING REVEALED THAT REFRIGERATED AERATION GENERALLY CONTROLS THE INSECTS EFFICIENTLY, WITHOUT AFFECTING THE QUALITY OF THE WHEAT OR OF FLOUR.
