Summary

THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH WAS TO EVALUATE SUITABLE TREATMENTS TO REDUCE BITTER PIT IN APPLES, BOTH IN ORCHARDS AND DURING STORAGE. MINERAL CONTENTS IN THE FRUIT WERE ALSO EVALUATED. CALCIUM SALT TREATMENT MODERATELY REDUCED BITTER PIT, PARTICULARLY IN ORCHARDS WHERE THE DISEASE IS NOT TOO PROLIFIC. HIGHER AMOUNTS OF CALCIUM WERE FOUND IN FRUIT TREATED IN THE ORCHARDS, AS WELL AS IN POSTHARVEST TREATED FRUIT, THE CALCIUM HAVING LITTLE EFFECT ON BITTER PIT IN THE LATTER CASE.
