Efficiency assessment of a cylindrical-parabolic solar collector in order to couple it with an Ericsson engine: application to electricity production.

Evaluation des performances d'un capteur solaire parabolique en vue de son couplage avec un moteur Ericsson : application à la production d'électricité.

Summary

Performances of a parabolic trough solar collector coupled to an Ericsson engine for electric production. The coupling of a simple, low cost, two-stage parabolic trough concentrator with a reciprocating Joule cycle air engine (i.e. a simple, low technology, middle temperature difference Ericsson engine), has been studied. A thermodynamic model has shown that there is an optimal engine design point (in terms of pressure ratio and mass flow rate) that maximizes the mechanical power produced by the thermal engine, for a given solar trough concentrator. A sensitivity analysis studies the influence of the beam solar radiation, the ambient temperature, the heat recovery exchanger effectiveness, the optical concentrator efficiency and the mechanical efficiencies on the system shaft power. This paper highlights the value of such a solar energy conversion system.
