Efficiency improvement of transcritical carbon dioxide refrigerating systems.

Author(s) : PEARSON S. F.

Summary

The paper describes detrimental effects of low critical temperature of carbon dioxide on system efficiency. Effects of suction heat exchangers, discharge pressure optimisation, sub-cooling of supercritical fluid, economizing at intermediate pressure, parallel compression economizing for single-stage reciprocating compressors, expansion turbines and improved heat transfer are described. It is shown that the benefits of some of these systems are mutually exclusive. Conclusions are drawn as to best available efficiencies. It is shown that efficiencies higher than those currently achieved with halocarbon refrigerants can be achieved.
