Summary

This paper is aimed at presenting an investigation concerning the efficiency of finned air-cooled heat exchangers with different geometrical arrangements, in rectangular ducts. The differential energy equation is numerically solved, then the fin efficiency and the augmentation factor are calculated by a simple numerical integration. The results show that the temperature distribution and the fin performance depend on four dimensionless parameters, the first accounting for the heat transfer condition, the other ones accounting for the geometry of the extended surface (tube aspect ratio and pitches). Several tables are presented, allowing the efficiency of the extended surface to be deduced as a function of the thermal and geometric parameters.
