Efficient and ecological system for an artificial ice rink.

Author(s) : HERA D., DRUGHEAN L.

Summary

The artificial ice rink in Miercurea Ciuc, Romania, was been modernized in 2001, in order to comply with local and international regulations. Made in 1970, this covered skating rink, with course dimensions of 60 x 30 square metres, was meant to be used for hockey, figure skating and leisure purposes. A solution involving indirect vapour spreading was chosen, using ammonium as refrigerating agent, due to its favourable thermodynamic and environment-friendly properties. Since a small quantity is used (maximum 50 kg, in the refrigerating unit exclusively), it does not involve any risk for athletes or audience.
