Summary

Emissivity is one of the most important properties of materials being used in cryogenics. The values of emissivity obtained from calculations using electromagnetic field theory are valid only for optically smooth surfaces. It means that reliable values of emissivity have to be obtained from experiment. several different methods of emissivity measurement are described in literature: direct optical emissivity measurement, indirect optical measurements and finally - calorimetric measurement methods. However, the available data about emissivity values of materials at low temperatures is limited and maybe insufficient to perform precise heat in-leaks calculations. The paper describes calorimetric emissivity measurement method that uses Gifford-McMahon type cryocooler. This method requires no liquid cryogens and provides means to control the sample temperature. The research will be conducted in cooperation with European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN.
