Summary
Over the past few years, there has been a gradual increase in the use of air-cooled water chillers for air conditioning in civil, institutional and commercial applications; builders and consultants justify this choice with economic advantages (minus installation costs of machines), operation/maintenance advantages and less technical volume requirements. Since at a first glance the water-cooled systems appear to be energetically favoured, the authors thought it useful to extend the investigation to other aspects, such as overall installation costs, electric power employed, maintenance costs, technical volumes involved. The evaluation has been as complete as possible, including not only chillers, but also pumps, connecting pipes, thermal insulation, water treatment, valves and all that is needed to obtain a complete installation. The evaluation, limited to civil and commercial air-conditioning applications, focuses on a range of capacities between 250 and 1500 kW.
