Summary
In this paper, the additional energy saving effect of evaporative cooling assuming water spray humidification was studied following the hybrid ventilation system in a data center consisting of sensible cooling and vapor humidification, which was studied in Part 1. It was found that the unexpectedly large humidification load in the Tokyo metropolitan area due to the hot, dry climate in summer could be significantly reduced by adding an evaporative cooling system to the hybrid ventilation system. Micro environments in data centers were analyzed using CFD to study factors affecting thermal stratification and induction air temperature of Datacom equipment. A full-scale laboratory experiment was reproduced by CFD and the reliability of the predictions was checked through comparison with observation. Case studies for different air induction positions in Datacom equipment in natural ventilation mode and variation of partial air-conditioning modes were examined to maximize thermal stratification efficiency. Thermal stratification efficiency was quite sensitive to the height of the air induction position of Datacom equipment, and to the air-conditioned equipment distribution.
