Looks at energy-saving technologies in intelligent buildings in Japan. Notes energy-saving legislation determining what the developer can do. Describes case studies of three energy-conserving intelligent buildings exhibiting unusual techniques or systems: 1) the Crystal Tower, with a vapour crystal air-conditioning system with night generation and ice storage; 2) the New Otani Garden Court with the largest cogeneration plant in Japan; 3) the NEC Super Tower with an energy expenditure approximately 70% of that for a conventional office. Concludes by reviewing the state of technology of intelligent buildings in Japan.
