Energy flexible heat pumps - Reference cycle requirements and the effects of the on-board energy flexibility interfaces.

Number: 0205

Author(s) : EVENS M., ARTECONI A.

Summary

Heat pumps support the decarbonisation of the heating sector, while providing energy flexibility services. As heat pump manufacturers already implement internal control strategies for a safe and reliable operation, flexible control strategies have to be carefully designed to take the on-board control into account. Experimental trials allow an evaluation of the real heat pump behaviour and performance. However, reference environmental conditions have to be pre-determined to run ad hoc tests. This paper firstly presents a general approach for obtaining a reference cycle for energy flexibility evaluation with heat pumps. Simulations and hardware-in-the-loop experiments on a water/water heat pump showed the cycle requirements for heat pump energy flexibility evaluations. Secondly, the reference cycle and hardware set-up were used to evaluate on-board flexibility interfaces by applying several flexible heat pump control strategies.
