Energy retrofit of an educational building in the ancient center of Benevento. Feasibility study of energy savings and respect of the historical value.

Summary
Starting from the targets that all European countries established by receiving the recent EU Directives in matter of energy saving and environmental protection, the paper shows, through a case-study, a procedural method for reliable energy diagnoses, mainly
suitable for ancient buildings, aimed to support the design of energy refurbishment and suitable for taking into account all topics related to building energy efficiency. More in detail, the methodology has been applied to an historical building located in the ancient center of an Italian city, Benevento. The investigated building - known as Ex-INPS - is used by the Faculty of Engineering of University of Sannio. Methods for an integrated energy diagnosis have been applied, combining in-situ monitoring, documental information, numerical studies. The proposed approach for the feasibility study is structured according to two main phases: a) the energy characterization of the present building, through a proper modeling and hourly simulation of the energy performance of the integrated building / HVAC systems, b) the investigation of energy saving potential, by adopting energy efficiency measures and evaluating their profitability, on the basis of a reliable present scenario. The achieved results show that - even if the action on the existing stock, above all if characterized by an historical value, requires respect of several constraints - however significant margins for energy savings are available.
