Summary

The Cristallo Theatre was inaugurated in 1954 in Bolzano, when part of the estate of the Novacella Abbey became propriety of the Curia. It was an untreated room used, initially, as a temporary church. The desire to create a space that allows the community to gather made it a Theatre. In February 1963 it was inaugurated; the Cinema Theatre Cristallo lives his epic from 1963 to 1973. Then the Cristallo Theatre closed due to debt and becomes for thirty years a location for the filming of a local television and a music room. In Year 1996 the Italian Cultural Department allocate funding for the renovation of the Theatre. From 2001 the Theatre was renovated, both in the envelope and in the HVAC systems too. Offices cooling is provided by split-system, installed on the ceiling. In foyer there aren’t cooling and ventilation system. The hall of the Cristallo Theatre is heated with a floor heating system, similar to the offices and foyer. Tubes are installed under the floors in the stalls area and in the corridors under the chairs. To cool the Theatre hall a mechanical controlled ventilation system was installed. It provides both heated and cooled air for the environment. The fresh air is fed into the room through the seats of the Theatre hall. All circuits are connected to the central air conditioning located under the Theatre. The Cristallo Theatre began a monitoring and analysis with the aim to improve the energy performance and comfort of the Theatre and the offices. The analysis has the objective to reduce gas consumption and improve indoor comfort in offices, foyer and in the Theatre, which present different problems. The offices are not equipped with a control system for the indoor temperature, which currently is handled according to the flow temperature of the radiant floor system. The same problem was also reported in foyer, in which, during periods of crowding (before and after shows) complained of discomfort were reported. The Theatre is used both in winter and in summer. In the latter discomfort were point out when many people are presented: the ventilation system is unable to balance the increase of the internal loads. To characterize the building-system an analysis of the envelope and the radiant system was carried out in winter of 2013. A thermographic analysis was associated with a continuous monitoring of temperature and relative humidity in the Theatre and offices. An analysis of the HVAC system and the system of management and control will be at the basis of the proposed improvement of the Theatre. Simultaneously consumptions were analyzed (both electric and gas), in order to assess the savings that can be achieved with different HVAC system proposals. Based on the data obtained from the monitoring possible interventions will be analyzed, such as, the use of the radiant system also during summer period and the free cooling of the Theatre.
