PERFORMANCE DATA ARE GIVEN FOR A 3-EFFECT EVAPORATOR (CAPACITY 9,000 KG EVAPORATED WATER/H) WITH A THERMOCOMPRESSOR AND A 3-EFFECT EVAPORATOR (CAPACITY 12,450 KG EVAPORATED WATER/H) EQUIPPED WITH A MECHANICAL VAPOUR COMPRESSOR. THE LATTER HAD A 4.5 TIMES HIGHER ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION BUT THE STEAM CONSUMPTION WAS 96.3% LOWER, AND IT IS CALCULATED THAT ITS ANNUAL RUNNING COSTS (EXCLUDING PERSONNEL) WERE LOWER BY MORE THAN DM 500,000. THESE CALCULATIONS ARE BASED ON A TOTAL ANNUAL OPERATING TIME OF 300 DAYS, ELECTRICITY CHARGE OF DM 0.19/KWH AND STEAM COSTS OF ABOUT DM 40/T. (DAIRY SCI. ABSTR., GB., 45, N.1, 1983/01, 22, 214.
