Entropy change at the magnetostructural phase transition of polycrystalline MnBi.

Number: sect. 2

Author(s) : BASSO V., OLIVETTI E. S., MARTINO L., et al.

Summary

In this paper the authors investigate the magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline MnBi at its magnetostructural transition at 628 K. The samples, prepared by rapid quenching and annealing, present 86 wt% of the hexagonal MnBi phase. The entropy change at the transition is found to be ?s =17.6 J/kg.K and the magnetic field shifts the transition temperature of 2.6 K/T. Despite the relevant magnetocaloric properties, the temperature hysteresis, of 19 K, is quite large for magnetothermal application.
