Effect of magnetic field configuration of permanent magnet on performance of an active magnetic regenerator.

Author(s) : KIM Y., JEONG S.

Summary

In this paper, the effect of magnetic field configuration generated by permanent magnet array is discussed by numerical simulation. Practically, the magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet is not evenly distributed due to its end-effect. The uneven magnetic field distribution can cause performance degradation of AMR (active magnetic regenerator) system since each part of the AMR along the length direction experiences different magnetic field variation according to the relative motion of the AMR and the magnet. The performance change of the AMR is quantitatively compared in terms of cooling capacity according to the shape of magnetic field that can be actually generated by Halbach array. The internal thermodynamic state of the magnetic refrigerant during the operation is also investigated with temperature-entropy diagram.
