Summary

The van der Waals' equation of state was the first equation able to represent qualitatively the liquid and the vapour phase. Numerous attempts have been made to enhance its precision. For a better determination of the vapour pressure and the densities of non-polar compounds the most successful methods focus on the variation of the attraction parameter with temperature or on the form of the attraction term itself, sometimes by introducing a third parameter. The method of volume translation allows a significant improvement in the determination of volumes. Determination of the parameters of an equation of state generally requires knowledge of the critical coordinates of the substance to which it is applied: this can raise problems when dealing with heavy compounds. Critical coordinates or the parameters of the equation of state themselves can be estimated by group contribution methods.
