Evaluating and correcting performance deficiencies in 850 kWh, R22 ice thermal storage refrigerating plant.

Author(s) : COLE R. A.

Summary

A refrigerating plant for producing ice to be used for thermal storage was installed at a foam rubber production facility in the Southeastern United States. Its purpose was to provide chilled water for processing while taking advantage of favorable night-time electric rates. After six months of operation with numerous adjustments and changes, the system had still not been able to operate for more than several hours at a time and had never built up a complete complement of ice. An engineering evaluation to determine the cause(s) of the problems was commissioned and both operating and design deficiencies were found and corrected.
