Summary

IN CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE COLD STORAGE OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES IT IS IMPORTANT TO ACHIEVE THE OPTIMAL COMPOSITION OF ROOM ATMOSPHERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, AND WITH PRODUCTS HAVING A LOW METABOLIC ACTIVITY, NITROGEN GENERATORS CAN BE USED. A NEW TYPE OF NITROGEN GENERATOR, SEPARATING OXYGEN FROM NITROGEN BY MEANS OF POLAR MEMBRANES WITH SELECTIVE PERMEABILITY, HAS BEEN TESTED. THIS APPARATUS WAS ABLE TO SUPPLY EITHER A HIGH NITROGEN FLOW RATE WITH 95% PURITY, AS REQUIRED FOR A SHORT STARTING TRANSIENT, OR A SMALLER NITROGEN FLOW RATE WITH 99% PURITY, AS REQUIRED IN THE FINAL STORAGE PERIOD. THESE DIFFERENT PERCENTAGES CAN BE INDUCED SIMPLY BY CHANGING THE PRESSURE OF THE INLET AIR STREAM, IN THE RANGE FROM 600 TO 700 KILOPASCALS AT A CONSTANT FLOW RATE. E. F.
