Evaluation of lubricant chemistries for CO2 compressors.

Summary

The selection of a lubricant for CO2 compressors can have a major impact on the long-term reliability and performance of systems. The importance of this issue is further highlighted by the exceptional solvency, high operating pressure and acidic nature of CO2 in the presence of moisture. In the work a screening test matrix, including miscibility, solubility, working viscosity, sealed tube stability and lubricity, was conducted on lubricants of different chemistries to demonstrate the specific characteristics of each lubricant when interacting with CO2. Blends of lubricants were also tested in an attempt to find the optimal formulation. The information collected is beneficial to the successful implementation of the carbon dioxide system.
