Summary

In recent years, environmental aspects are increasingly becoming an important issue in the design and development of refrigeration systems. Taking into account regulations for greenhouse gas emissions, the carbon dioxide (R744 or CO2) is one choice for a non-toxic and non-flammable refrigerant. The development of a CO2 compressor represents a significant challenge compared to household compressors (using R134a or R600a) specially due to the high pressure of the CO2 transcritical cycle. Thus, the components work in severe conditions which require a careful analysis of failure modes. Among many components of CO2 compressor, the suction valve deserves special attention because its design is strongly correlated with the compressor efficiency and reliability. Other important aspects to be considered are cost, manufacturing and assembly easiness. This work describes some suction valve failure modes of CO2 compressor to ensure the necessary reliability respecting required efficiency.
