Summary
Buildings in developed countries are responsible for between 40 and 50% of the total primary energy consumption. In South Africa commercial buildings alone are responsible for 9% of the total-electrical energy consumption and 16% of the peak-electrical bill in the Cape Town area. They also found that air conditioning is the dominant load in these buildings since it contributed to 70% of the normal consumption and 80% of the peak demand. In general about 50% of the total-commercial electrical energy bill can be attributed to air conditioning in buildings. The building that was analyzed is a 81-m2 workshop situated on the campus of the University of Pretoria.
