Evaluation of the efficiency of natural antioxidants in the control of superficial scald on "Granny Smith" apples.

Author(s) : CALVO G., SALVADOR M. E.

Summary

The efficiency of natural antioxidants in scald control was evaluated. Treatments were: squalene 5% + 1000 ppm DPA; -tocopherol 5, 10 and 20%; 2500 ppm DPA and control. The fruit was evaluated after 6 and 8 months in cold storage. Incidence and severity of superficial scald, maturity and quality of the fruit were evaluated. Squalane alone or combined with DPA controlled effectively superficial scald in apples cv Granny Smith after 6 and 8 months of storage. -tocopherol 20% provided scald control similar to that obtained with DPA, but the fruit presented severe dehydration symptoms. Doses below 20% did not control scald efficiently.
