Evaluation of the thermal performance of refrigerated facilities.

Author(s) : ESTRADA-FLORES S., EDDY A.

Summary

A published internal cooling method (IIR, 2002) was applied to evaluate the thermal performance of a cold store and a refrigerated loading dock, dedicated to the handling of pharmaceutical products. Measurements included the insulation effectiveness and the temperature variability in the pallet space. Both facilities presented lower insulation effectiveness coefficients than the values recommended by ASHRAE (2006) for chiller rooms. Although the insulation effectiveness of the refrigerated dock was low, the temperature variability was only about 2°C. Conversely, the cold store presented an insulation effectiveness value close to 'best practice' recommendations, but presented high temperature variability (about 6°C). Critical aspects that affect the accuracy of the method are: specifications for evaporator and condenser capacity, accurate measurement of inlet and outlet temperatures in evaporators and condensers and the measurement of the air flow through the evaporator. Therefore, both performance indicators should be taken into account in the assessment of cool rooms.
