Summary

The characteristics of a lubricant are clearly defined. Viscosity or capacity to flow depends on temperature and the solubility of the refrigerant fluid in the lubricant. The miscibility of a fluid and a lubricant is their capability to form a single liquid phase in mixture. The pour-point is the temperature at which a lubricant no longer flows for 5 seconds. The flocculation point is the temperature at which a milky deposit appears in a mixture of 10% oil and 90% a given refrigerant. To select the right lubricant, one must be quite familiar with the installation, the fluid used, the type of refrigeration, the brand and the type of compressor and the criteria dictated by its manufacturer need to be well known.
