Summary

The selection criteria of a refrigerating oil are outlined: theorical assessment through physico-chemical tests and practical assessment through tests on machines simulating the mechanical constraints and through tests on compressors. The main types of oils used in refrigeration are described: naphthenic basic mineral oils, alkylbenzene oil, polyester oils or "esters". The recommended oils for HCFC's and HFC's are then indicated. The use of refrigerating oils must take their hygroscopicity and their detergent effect into account and will necessitate the addition of additives. J.L.
