Evolution of CO2 refrigeration technology, applications and an outlook for the next several years from the view of a manufacturer.

Number: 0004

Author(s) : HELLMANN S.

Summary

Refrigeration systems with CO2 (R744) have become the mainstream for supermarket refrigeration. However, 20 years ago this was not the case, neither was it foreseeable. This article describes how an industry company made its way to become one of the leaders in this technology – which key steps have been taken and what research and developments have been done to re-invent and even further improve a cycle process that was nearly forgotten. It will also provide an outlook on the challenges to come, either driven by the recent climate discussion to help further reduce the environmental impact and direct or indirect equivalent greenhouse gas emissions supported by the refrigeration system, or by the considerations for green electrification needs such as smart grids and where a CO2 based supermarket can play a role.
