Summary

A survey was done among manufacturers with a view to improving performance in mechanical-compression refrigerating machines and heat pumps, and the results concerning exchangers are given here. Current evaporator and condenser features are fully explained, along with their working temperature segments and their limits. The new technologies aim at intensifying thermal exchanges by using more effective enhanced-surface pipes and fins and by improving equipment compactness. But in order to make these new technologies better known, research and development initiatives must be promoted. Priority research and development directions are grouped into three main themes: fluid flow, heat transfer and innovative technologies. J.L.
