Expanding the limits: heat pump technology and markets in North America.

Author(s) : LANNUS A.

Summary

The last several years have seen the introduction (in some case, the re-introduction) of new technology in the form of variable speed and two-speed heat pumps, heat pumps integrated with water heating and coupled with thermal storage or combustion heating systems. In the United States, federal minimum efficiency standards, now in effect, have driven up the efficiency of the units sold. At the same time, the cloud on the continued availability of R22, and the lack of a suitable non-ozone-depleting alternative have created a significant challenge to the future prospects of the heat pump. The paper reports on the major technology developments and market factors affecting electric heat pumps in North America.
