Experiences with forced-air precooling of horticultural crops in Canada.
Author(s) : FRASER H., MACKINNON I.
Summary
Current forced-air precooling trends in Canada are described according to region. Approximately 279,000 t of fresh market fruit and vegetables could potentially be cooled in this way. Field problems and tangible and intangible benefits are discussed. Cost benefit analysis for strawberries showed that a separate forced-air cooled storage facility cost approximately USD 42/t.year to own and operate, while losses without one could cost at least USD 88/t.year if precooling methods were inadequate.
