Experimental and model study of the heat pump/air conditioning systems based on transcritical cycle with R744.

Author(s) : BEAVER A., YIN J., BULLARD C. W., et al.

Summary

The paper describes some results of a project to build and test a prototype of an air conditioning heat pump system that operates on a transcritical cycle using R744 (carbon dioxide). The system utilizes aluminium microchannel heat exchangers and an open compressor. The performance of the R744 system is compared to a baseline R410A system of equal heat exchanger volume, hermetic scroll compressor and higher air-side pressure drop. The R744 system operates with the same or slightly higher COP at lower ambient temperatures (26/27 °C) and a slightly lower COP at higher ambient temperature (26/35 °C, indoor/outdoor) for tests performed at equal capacity.
