Experimental investigation of transcritical R744 (CO2) Voorhees heat pump.

Author(s) : ZHA S., HAFNER A.

Summary

Based on a previous theoretical study (see this Bulletin, reference 2006-0962), a test rig for R744 Voorhees heat pump cycle is built and introduced. Both the R744 Voorhees heat pump cycle and the conventional transcritical heat pump cycle are tested at different air mass flow rates and different evaporating temperatures. The measured heating capacity of the Voorhees heat pump cycle was up to 2 times higher compared to the conventional transcritical heat pump cycle at low evaporating temperatures. COP was found lower in the Voorhees heat pump cycle for the maximum capacity operation conditions. However, at equal capacity operating conditions, the COP of the Voorhees cycle was found to be in the same range as the conventional heat pump system. Further experimental investigations will be done with the current prototype Voorhees compressor to complete the current preliminary experimental results. Design changes will be evaluated to reduce internal volumes and leaks.
