Summary

THE DYNAMICS OF NORMAL ZONES IN SUPERCONDUCTING COPPER-NIOBIUM, COPPER/NIOBIUM-TITANIUM, AND BRONZE/NIOBIUM-TIN COMPOSITES, ARISING FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OF VARIOUS THERMOMAGNETOMECHANICAL INSTABILITIES, HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED. IT IS SHOWN THAT, EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO TRANSPORT CURRENT, NORMAL ZONES MAY BE MACROSCOPIC IN SIZE (OF THE ORDER OF CENTIMETRES).
