Summary

50-80°C low-grade heat sources are very abundant in natural and industrial fields, which urgently need to be exploited for producing cooling capacity. This paper presents a hybrid system which combines adsorption refrigeration and desiccant coated heat exchangers to exploit low-grade heat sources effectively. In this study, the performance of two working modes of the hybrid system is experimentally investigated. Results show that the cascade utilization mode and high efficiency mode operate effectively at 50-80oC heat sources. With the increase of heat source temperature, cooling capacities of two modes increase while COPs exhibit a monotonic diminishment. Comparatively, the cascade utilization mode produces more cooling capacity, which is 13% higher than high efficiency mode. High efficiency mode has a higher COP value, reaching a maximum of 0.673 at a heat source temperature of 50oC. This hybrid system can effectively utilize low-grade heat sources, providing a promising solution for efficient energy utilization.
