Summary

A desiccant coated evaporative cooler is proposed, that serves the dual purpose of dehumidifying the outdoor air as well as achieving a reduction in DBT, for usage in air-conditioning conditioning applications in hot and humid marine climatic conditions. The aim is to provide an eco-friendly alternative to the existing vapour compression system being used onboard ships. The setup proposes two parallel desiccant coated evaporative coolers, wherein one cooler works in dehumidification mode and the other in regeneration mode, at any given time. The waste heat of diesel generators onboard the ships is proposed for regenerating the desiccant. Detailed numerical investigations of the heat and mass transfer interactions were undertaken using partial differential equations in space and time. The results obtained through the coding through MATLAB version R2021a, show that it is feasible to achieve the required air-conditioning parameters onboard ships. It was also observed that the proposed system could achieve a temperature reduction of 4-8℃, as compared to existing DCHEs.
