Summary
To respond to climate change caused by environmental pollution, researches on lithium-ion battery are conducted in various fields, including automobile industry, to utilize as a new energy storage source for eco-friendly energy. In the case of lithium-ion batteries, capacity, lifespan, and stability are greatly affected by their thermal conditions, so battery thermal management is essential to maintain the battery temperature under optimal battery temperature conditions. Recently, research on battery thermal management systems has employed various methods to achieve cooling or preheating. However, for electric vehicles, the size and weight of the battery management system must be minimized. In addition, battery management system has required not only a cooling function to remove heat from the battery operation, but also a preheating function for stable operation of the battery in low temperature conditions. In this study, a design was proposed that combines hybrid fins using heat pipes with the bottom thermal management system used in existing electric vehicles to further improve cooling and preheating performance without significantly changing the size of the thermal management system. The preheating performance of the proposed hybrid fin and plain fin was compared through experiments based on various variables, and overall, the minimum battery temperature increased by 13.6 K and the battery internal temperature difference decreased by 8.1 K. Additionally, the superiority in heat transfer performance of proposed design was confirmed and the proposed hybrid fin was capable of preheating as well as cooling the heat generated by battery operation through experiments.
