Summary
THE HEAT PIPE WAS 0.1 METRE DIAMETER, 11 METRE LENGTH (8 METRES UNDER THE GROUND) AND 14.5 SQUARE METRE FIN AREA FOR THE CONDENSER. R22 WAS USED AS THE WORKING FLUID. SOIL SURROUNDING THE HEAT PIPE WAS FROZEN ABOUT 80 CM DIAMETER FOR ONE WINTER WITH ABOUT 500 DEGREE DAYS OF FROST. COLD ENERGY OF ABOUT 16.75 X 10,000 KILOJ PER METRE OF THE HEAT PIPE WAS STORED IN THIS FROZEN SOIL AND IN UNFROZEN SOIL AROUND IT. THE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE AIR AND THE EVAPORATOR WAS ONLY SOME DEGREES. THIS PAPER REPORTS ON THE DESIGN AND EFFICIENCY OF THE HEAT PIPE AND A METHOD IS PROPOSED FOR MAINTAINING A LARGE MASS OF EARTH FROZEN ALL YEAR ROUND.
