THE DIFFERENT GROUND FREEZING PROCESSES ARE STUDIED (OPEN, CLOSED OR MIXED). THE MAIN CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT PROCESSES ARE DEFINED AND SOME TESTS CARRIED OUT IN ITALY BETWEEN 1972 AND 1979, USING THE MIXED PROCESS, ARE REPORTED. THE STUDIES MADE IN NAPLES IN 1979 ARE ESPECIALLY DESCRIBED, WHERE THE MIXED PROCESS WAS USED FOR DIGGING UNDER THE WATER-BEARING BED FOR A 3.40 M DIAMETER SEWER AT THE CENTRE OF THE TOWN, BELOW BUILDINGS.
