Summary
The objectives of this study are to investigate the flow characteristics of coiled capillary tubes and to develop a dimensionless correlation on the basis of the experimental data. Most empirical correlations reported by previous researchers were developed with straight capillary tubes. However, the effects of the shape of the coiled capillary tube have hardly been investigated. As the size of the residential air conditioner becomes compact, the space which assembles components in an air conditioner is getting limited. Therefore, the supplier uses the spirally coiled capillary tubes as an expansion device in most air-conditioners. In this study, the mass flow rate through the coiled capillary tubes was measured for various condensing temperatures and degrees of subcooling at the inlet of each capillary tube. The condensing temperatures were selected as 40.5, 47.5, and 54.5 °C, and degrees of subcooling were adapted to 3.5, 6.5, and 11.5 °C. The results for the straight capillary tubes were compared with those of the coiled circular and rounded rectangular capillary tubes. The mass flow rates of the coiled capillary tubes decreased by 7-11% compared with those of the straight capillary tubes. An empirical correlation was developed by considering the effects of inlet conditions and the shapes of capillary tubes based on the Buckingham pi-theorem.
